PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) – A Pensacola teacher is among 41 science teachers sharing $110,000 in grant money from the Society for Science’s STEM Research Grants program.
Karen Bruening teaches environmental science, experimental science and AP computer science principles, and has taught biology, earth/space science, physics, physical science at Pensacola High School.
The grant program is designed to advance hands-on science education in middle and high school classrooms nationwide.
“I am thrilled to receive this grant,” said Bruening, who is in her eighth year at Pensacola High School.
“We have such a strong science department, and these data loggers will be used by not only my two classes this year, but also by scores of students in the future for many different studies. This equipment will help Pensacola High School to become a wonderful center for both teachers and students to do research,” she said.
Bruening is a Society for Science advocate for this school year, and currently has several students doing projects for ISEF-qualifying local science fairs. She also has a partnership with the University of Florida NHERI/Powell Lab which allows students to do experiments in the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel.
Among the 41 awardees, 19 teachers will be supplied with research kits, and 22 educators will receive funds, each up to $5,000, designed to ignite creativity and amplify student exploration in the realm of their genuine scientific interests. The kits, valued at $1,000 each, encompass four distinct types tailored to enhance varied types of available classroom resources.
The Society for Science is a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit committed to advancing STEM education and building science literacy. The society’s STEM Research Grants program, sponsored by Regeneron, aims to break down barriers and create a more equitable landscape in STEM education to empower students to pursue and excel in scientific fields, regardless of their individual circumstances, according to the organization.
